Summer Diving Instructional Camps

at Calvin University

Level I – Beginner: This program is for divers new to the sport and will focus on fundamentals and basics. Skills learned include forward and backwards approaches, entry into the water, dry land skills training, and basic dives (forward dive, back dive and twist). These skills improve flexibility, body awareness, balance, agility, and confidence. To participate, the child must have the ability to swim 25 yards without stopping. 

Level II – Novice: This program is for divers that have limited experience and a desire to grow their diving skills. Skills learned include developing a walking approach, fine tuning basic dives and spatial awareness, learning inward dives and forward and backward somersaults. This class will include an introduction to the water spotting belt. (Requirements: hurdle, front dive, back dive; or significant gymnastics experience)

Level III – Intermediate: This program is for divers that have a basic working knowledge of the sport and wish to expand their diving skills to a more competitive level. Skills learned include advanced trampoline work (with safety spotting belt), flipping somersaults, twisting and spotting drills, and further development of body position and spatial awareness. Depending on ability, reverse dives will be introduced. (Requirements: hurdle, front dive, front 1 somersault, back dive, inward dive)

Level IV – Advanced: This program is for divers with some competition experience (camps, country club, junior high, AAU, high school, and/or USA Junior Olympic). Divers will perfect their current dive list and add new dives and degree of difficulty. Dryland training, strength training, multiple somersaults and twisting, spotting, advanced trampoline skills with spotting belt, and water spotting belt will be used. Reverse dives will be worked on. FACILITY: All programs will make use of dryland mats, dryland diving board, trampoline, poolside area, 1 m diving boards, and 3 m diving boards (Requirements: hurdle, front dive, front 1 somersault, front 1.5 ss, back dive, back somersault, inward dive)

For more time in the pool, register for two practices in a row!

CAMP POLICIES

LOCATION & CHECK IN: Venema Aquatic Center located inside of the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex. You may enter the pool through the Family Locker Room located on the lower level. Please meet on the blue mats on the pool deck area nearest the diving boards on the first day of lessons. If you have any questions, please contact the camp director at AW48@Calvin.edu.
